Turning 21

Around my birthday I have always written down a list of goals and bucket list items for that year. The same way people do with a New Year but more personal to me.

So, a few months later I thought I would reflect on what I have achieved so far and give you some idea of things on my list so you can see my kind of vibe and maybe this is something you could start doing in the future!

1. Read at least 1 book a month. I absolutely love reading, but for the last few years, I have had the attitude that I don’t have time for it anymore (such a bad excuse). I set the target of just 1 book as I know I can achieve it without putting pressure on myself to read and then not enjoy the book. For September I read The Sisters by Claire Douglas, after finishing the book I had a little look at some reviews online, people seem to have enjoyed it but I found the first 3/4 a bit dull. I loved the last quarter, it was full of twists that I didn’t see coming and I never wanted to put it down. I’m not sure if it’s because I haven’t read for a while so found it hard to get into but I didn’t find it very gripping until the end. I have already read my October book which was Fractured by Karin Slaughter. This book is number 2 in the Will Trent series. I read the previous book within a few days and fell in love with Will Trent so was expecting another thrilling book. There were a few parts I found a bit slow but the majority of it I really enjoyed reading. Definitely try out one of her books if you like crime thriller! Please bear in mind, some of her work is extremely violent and gruesome so these books may not be for you.

2.  Take my CBT. When I was younger I always wanted to be a cool chick with a motorbike. While the cool bit may be out of the window, I still like the idea of having a bike. The horror stories scare me a little so I thought I would start at the bottom, take my CBT, and try out a moped for a few months. Then if I like it, work my way up to a full bike licence. I just need to stop being a chicken and try it!

3. Find a new hobby. I haven’t had a proper hobby since school, over the last year I have picked up a bit of photography but I haven’t given it my full effort. In a way, I suppose I have found a hobby by starting this blog but I would like to try out some more things too and take some time out of my week dedicated to photography as I know how much I enjoy it when I get into it.

I attempted to make myself a top this summer

4. Become plant-based. I have been veggie on and off for a couple of years but I am such a huge animal lover, I find it hard to understand why I would support industries that hurt animals for my satisfaction. However, I do respect that it is normalised and hard to change your eating habits overnight. Over the last 6 weeks, I have cut out meat (slipped up once) and minimised my dairy. Still a working progress but it is definitely something I want to do. If you are interested in becoming veggie or vegan there are plenty of resources online. James Aspey does amazing work for the vegan moment, give him a follow on Insta. Bosh.tv show you how easy it is, with tasty vegan recipes. Netflix has some good documentaries including What the Health, Cowspiracy and Forks over Knives. Do some research, there is a lot to learn!

5. Take a class. I have thought about doing this for a while with photography, everything I know is self-taught I would like to have a professional walk me through some bits. I would also quite like to do a cooking class, my kitchen skills are poor.

6. Do a road trip through Europe. I have spoken about doing this for a while now, just driving through countries with little to no plans and just being spontaneous. Camping, in a motor home, in hostels, I don’t mind but I would love to do it! Maybe this should be my summer 2020 trip?!

7. Spend at least 1-2 hours in nature a day. Since not having a job and doing some travelling, I have spent so much more time outside. Even when I had a job, after work the first thing I did was put on my wellies and headed out for a walk with my puppo. I can’t tell you how much better I feel when I have spent at least an hour outside. My head is clear and I become so relaxed. Now we’re heading into the colder months I really want to keep this habit up, I’m a much better person when I’ve had my dose of nature.

8. Grow some herbs. Growing up, my mum used to drag my sisters and I down to the allotments after school and make us help her. While I hated it the majority of the time, it always made us feel good to eat the food we had grown. Currently, I don’t have enough garden or space to have a proper veggie patch but I would love to have a mini herb garden.

I think it is so important to make short and long-time goals in addition to bucket list items that are achievable depending on where you are in life. Of course, my bucket list has some real big dreams on there but realistically I know I won’t be able to do them within the year. This is just a very small collection of my 21 goals for the year but I hope you see where I am going with it.

Give me some ideas of what you have on your bucket list or yearly goals, I’d love to hear them!

Thanks for reading!
