Christmas Markets in Amsterdam

Around this time of year, I start booking Christmas getaways for the following month. I don’t like winter at all, but you can’t help but be merry around Christmas time! Last year I spent five days in Amsterdam visiting Christmas markets and have my final holiday of the year.

My previous travel post highlighted 12 Things to do in Amsterdam so make sure you give that a read for other things to do!

Christmas in Amsterdam

Light Festival

One of the best things in Amsterdam around Christmas time is the Light Festival. There are around 30 pieces of art that illuminate the city in imaginative ways. This year the light theme is ‘Disrupt!’. To see these displays I recommend taking a canal tour, however, you are able to wander around the streets and see them for yourself!

Where: Around Amsterdam centre
When: 28th of November till the 19th of January
Time: Best time to see the lights is in the evening when it’s dark!

Ice Village

One of the most photographed Christmas events in Amsterdam. You have probably seen a beautiful picture of an ice rink in front of the Rijksmuseum. The ice village is made up of adorable little chalets selling everything from homemade gifts to warm food. This market is free entry!

Where: Museumplein
When: December 13th until the 26th
Time: 11am till 8pm (except from Christmas eve and Christmas day when it shuts at 5pm).

Amsterdam Winter Paradise

This is the ultimate winter wonderland in Amsterdam! There’s ice skating (indoor and outdoor), a Ferris wheel, curling, cross-country skiing, tube slides, and so so much more! There are three different tickets for this event, entrance only, a regular ticket which includes entrance and all activities, or a passe-partout which is a regular ticket but for the entire event.

   Online:                                                                                   Door sales:
Entrance only: €7,00                                                            Entrance only: €9,00
Regular ticket: €19,50                                                          Regular ticket: €21,50
Passe-partout: €39,50                                                           Passe-partout: €41,50

Where: Amsterdam RAI
When: 21st of December to the 5th of January
Time: Times vary most days but usually open at 9:30AM. Heres a link for the programme and opening times.

Funky Xmas Market

This monthly market does a special Christmas edition in December. Local artists, fashion designers and creative individuals come together to sell their homemade pieces! An inspiring place to wander around and find some Christmas gifts or soak up the artsy atmosphere!

Where: Westergasfabriek,
Polonceaukade 27
When: Sunday 15th December
Time: 12pm-6pm

Haarlem Christmas market

This year Haarlem Christmas market will be celebrating its 25th anniversary. Over the weekend there will be around three hundred Christmas stalls on and around the Grote Market offering a massive variety of goods! Expect handcrafted gifts, art, decor, food, and music! In 2017, this market was voted best Christmas market in the Netherlands, so definitely worth the visit!

Where: Grote Market Square, Haarlem
When: 7th to the 8th of December
Time: On the 7th, the market is open from 11am-9pm. On the 8th, it is open at 11am and shuts at 7pm.
